SOCCER MATCH ATTRACTS MORE VIEWERS THAN WORLD SERIES

Soccer came into its own on Sunday as 18.2 million viewers tuned in to ESPN to watch the World Cup match between the U.S. and Portugal, according to Nielsen Research. The figure slightly exceeded the 18 million who watched Fox’s coverage of the sixth game of the World Series last year, which saw the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals and thereby win the MLB championship. Indeed, no sport, aside from football, has been able to draw such impressive figures. Additionally, another 6.5 million viewers watched the game on Spanish-language Univision. The previous ratings record for a soccer game was set by the final of the 1999 women’s World Cup, when 18 million viewers watched the U.S. beat China.
