In a 6-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court dealt what may be a deadly blow to the Aereo streaming service that captures the broadcast signals of broadcast network TV stations and relays them to subscribers’ smartphones, tablets, and Internet-connected television sets. The high court sided with broadcasters who claimed that the service represented a theft of their signals and jeopardized the income that they receive from cable companies for retransmission fees. "We are pleased with today’s decision, which is great news for content creators and their audiences," CBS spokesman Dana McClintock said in a statement. "Today’s decision is a victory for consumers. The court has sent a clear message that it will uphold the letter and spirit of the law just as Congress intended," said Paul Clement, an attorney for the broadcasters. Aereo founder and CEO Chet Kanojia called the ruling a “massive setback for the American consumer” that sends a “chilling message to the technology industry.”
