In an apparent effort to reinvigorate its struggling HLN cable news network, Time Warner is reportedly in talks to buy or take a significant minority stake in Vice Media, published reports said today (Wednesday). Vice already produces a show for Time Warner-owned HBO. Neither Vice nor Time Warner would confirm the discussions. Vice CEO Shane Smith told the Wall Street Journal, “We’re talking to people all the time. Lots of things happening,” The discussions are occurring as Time Warner frets over plunging ratings for HLN, which are down 26 percent for total viewers from last season and 22 percent for viewers 25-54, the target demo for news advertisers. Buzzfeed.com said today that the apparent plan is for Time Warner to contribute cash and HLN to form a new entity that Vice would operate. News of the talks was first reported by Sky News, whose corporate parent, 21st Century Fox, acquired a 5 percent stake in Vice last year.
