WORLD CUP FAILS TO HURT OVERSEAS BOX OFFICE

June 23, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Studio executives who expected the overseas box office to collapse with the start of the World Cup were breathing a heavy sigh of relief as ticket sales remained virtually flat with the previous weekend. The big news was that Disney’s Maleficent, which opened in China with $20.3 million, crossed the $500-million mark in worldwide sales, making it Jolie’s biggest hit ever. (Overall, the film earned $44.7 million overseas.) How to Train Your Dragon 2 was close behind at the foreign box office with $43.5 million. Overall, the foreign box office was down from the same week a year ago, but at that time theaters were offering Man of Steel, Monsters University and World War Z. Business is expected to pick up considerably next week with the opening of Transformers: Age of Extinction in 37 markets.
