Overall box office receipts may be down some 20 percent this summer, according to studio statistics, but AMC, the nation’s second-largest theater chain, was not hurt nearly as much as some had expected. Revenue, it said, was down 5 percent in the second quarter to $726.6 million. But falling ticket sales were offset somewhat by increased spending at the concession stand. With every ticket, the average moviegoer spent $4.22 on popcorn, candy, and drinks — up 4.5 percent from the same quarter a year ago, AMC said. The company also launched a new ticketing platform that made tickets to its theaters available at numerous places on the Internet, resulting in a 45-percent increase in online ticket revenue, CEO Gerry Lopez said on Wednesday.
