Summertime is a particularly rewarding time for producers of animated family films. DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales of such movies take off as kids, out of school for summer vacation, spend more hours at home. This past week, 20th Century Fox’s Rio 2 topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, followed in second place by The Lego Movie and in third by a a two-fer pack consisting of both Rio films.(The original Rio also returned to the sales chart at No. 8.) In fourth place was another animated film, Disney’s Frozen. The Lego Movie headed Home Media magazine’s rental chart, while Universal’s Non-Stop came in at No.2 and Lone Survivor at No. 3.
