Han Han, who has been named one of the most influential figures in China because of his personal blog that often attracts as many as 300 million hits, can chalk up another success — as the writer-director of The Continent (Hou Hui Wu Qi), which brought in $47 million at the Chinese box office over the weekend. Han, who is also a race-car driver, scored with a road movie that drew thousand of comments on the Chinese social media. It earned more money than any film in North America and made the top ten on the overseas box office despite playing in only one country. Few critics have weighed in on the movie, either in China or the U.S. But writing in the Hollywood Reporter, Clarence Tsui called it "pretentious" and empty "of even the slightest smidgen of artistic edge and social relevance."
