Russian filmmakers are expressing dismay over new legislation that bans obscene words in films, plays, music, and television. In interviews with the British trade publication Screen Daily, many said that the laws will have little effect on producers of "hit commercial" movies but will wreak havoc with smaller productions, The trade publication quoted director Boris Khlebniko as saying in a radio interview that many of his films are set in the countryside, where obscene words are commonplace. He recalled an incident in which "four old ladies came up to me one after another [and] said they liked [his A Long and Happy Life], but that people don’t speak like that in the countryside."
