British Sky Broadcasting, better known as BSkyB, will announce on Friday that it has signed a deal with Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox to acquire Murdoch’s Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland and combine all three pay-TV operations into a new company that would be called Sky Europe, the Financial Times reported today (Thursday). (A regional airline with the name of Sky Europe operated from 2001-2009.) Proceeds from the arrangement — they were not disclosed — would help fund Murdoch’s continued pursuit of Time Warner, analysts said, while at the same time SkyEurope would be able to cancel duplicative programming and invest in new original programs itself. The combined company would embrace 19 million subscribers in the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany and Austria, making it one of the continent’s largest pay-TV players.
