NETFLIX STOPS SHIPPING DISCS ON SATURDAYS (BUT TELLS NO ONE)

Without giving prior notice to its 8 million subscribers who still rent videos by mail, Netflix quietly ended Saturday shipments in June. While some websites reported that the company had ended Saturday deliveries, Netflix explained that subscribers who order discs online by Friday will likely receive them on Saturday. Discs ordered on Saturday, which previously would have been in subscribers’ mailboxes on Monday, will now arrive on Tuesday. The move will result in cost savings for Netflix in two ways. First, it will be able to lay off many of the workers who staffed its distribution outlets on Saturday. Second, most DVD-by-mail subscribers will now be able to watch fewer movies, thereby lowering Netflix’s postage costs. While Netflix continues to focus most of its attention on its less-costly-to-operate streaming service, most newer movies are not available for streaming and are only available on disc.
