The overseas box office performed more robustly during the World Cup competition than most analysts had predicted. Now that it’s over, it fairly exploded over the weekend, with Transformers: Age of Extinction leading the way with $81.2 million in 59 markets. That brought its international gross to a whopping $659 million and its worldwide total to $886 million. Its U.S. total is $227 million, but it has hauled in $285.7 million in China (after adding another $9.6 million this weekend). (It should be noted, however, that U.S. studios only keep about 25 percent of the Chinese ticket sales.) Nevertheless, two locally produced films beat it this weekend, Tiny Times 3.0 with $30 million and The House that Never Dies, with $21 million.
