PLASMA-DISPLAY SCREENS GOING THE WAY OF CATHODE RAY SCREENS

July 3, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Many technical connoisseurs remain convinced that plasma-display TV sets produce a sharper, brighter, more nuanced image than LCD units, but buyers have not been sharing that conviction, preferring the lighter, cheaper LCD units. As a result, sales of plasma sets have plunged to the point where they have been abandoned by most manufacturers. Only two major ones still exist — Samsung and LG, both Korean firms, and soon only one will remain, following Samsung’s announcement on Wednesday that it will cease making plasma screens in November. How long LG will continue to do so is anyone’s guess. A spokeswoman for LG would only tell the Wall Street Journal that the company would continue to supply plasma screens "as long as there is demand."
