No one had expected a major disagreement to occur between negotiators for SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), and, partly because of a media blackout on the talks, it therefore came as something of a shock when the two sides were unable to reach a contract agreement before the current one expired on June 30. They initially said on Monday that they had agreed on a 24-hour extension of the contract, but the following day came and went without a new contract, and the two sides issued another statement late Tuesday saying that they had agreed to extend the contract another day. Analysts figured that the delay was not triggered by any major disagreement but was simply the result of the fact that the previous contracts were written before the merger of SAG and AFTRA and that consolidating the two contracts into a single master contract may be taking more time than expected.
