China’s state-run Xinhua news agency has described the success of Transformers: Age of Extinction on the Chinese mainland as "stunning." It also disclosed that the movie is currently being shown on 63 percent of the country’s 20,000 movie screens, or about 12,600. By contrast, the movie is playing on 4,233 screens in the U.S. No domestic Chinese film has come even close to achieving the box-office results of the latest Transformers movie. Not that producers haven’t tried. In an interview with Xinhua, Peking University professor Zhang Yiwu said that the success of the movie might actually help Chinese films. "Domestic films still lag behind in many ways, including special effects and storytelling, and they can learn more in direct confrontation with the American films," the professor said.
