AL GORE CLAIMS AL JAZEERA WITHHOLDS $65M OF SALES PRICE

Former Vice President Al Gore has sued Al Jazeera America, claimed that the channel, which bought his Current TV for $500 million two years ago, still owes him and partner Joel Hyatt $65 million. Famed media attorney David Boies, who is representing Gore and Hyatt, said in a statement, "Al Jazeera America wants to give itself a discount on the purchase price that was agreed to nearly two years ago. … We are asking the court to order Al Jazeera America to stop wrongfully withholding the escrow funds that belong to Current’s former shareholders." While numerous critics have praised Al-Jazeera’s news coverage — particularly its recent coverage of the Gaza turmoil — the news channel has failed to attract a significant audience and therefore a significant number of national advertisers. It reportedly attracts an average of just 17,000 viewers per night.
