Ticket sales were solid for Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy over the weekend, with the former taking in $28.5 million in its second week and the latter $25.1 million in its third week. But Lionsgate’s The Expendables 3 was feeling its age as it opened in fourth place with just $15.9 million, behind 20th Century Fox’s debut of the low-budget Let’s Be Cops with $17.8 million. Overall, the box office was up 6 percent from the same weekend a year ago, when Lee Daniels’ The Butler opened in first place with $24.6 million. While it now appears certain that August will set a box-office record for the month, the summer box office remains about 15 percent below a year ago while the 2014 total is 6 percent behind 2013.
