CHINA PULLS THE PLUG ON BEIJING FILM FESTIVAL — AGAIN

August 25, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Not for the first time, Chinese authorities have shut down the Beijing Independent Film Festival, a gathering in the town of Songzhuang that spotlights new independent movies and their filmmakers. The Los Angeles Times reported that when a man blocking the entrance to the festival was asked why the event had been canceled, he replied, "There is no why. Now leave." The annual festival has encountered problems on virtually every year of its 11-year history. Contacted by the Times by phone Sunday, Wang Hongwei, an organizer of the festival, and Fan Rong, the chief administrator, said they could not discuss the situation. The Voice of America reported that authorities had entered the premises and seized computers and films. Wang and festival founder Li Xianting were detained by authorities on Saturday and ordered to appear on Thursday to answer complaints and to present a business license. The festival is free.
