Most box office analysts had expected Guardians of the Galaxy to perform well this weekend. Several had even predicted it would set a record for August. In the end, it did all that and much more, soaring past even the rosiest predictions to an estimated $94 million. It also lifted the box office out of the two-month summer losing streak that had seen ticket sales fall 20 percent behind last summer’s. Total sales for the weekend came to around $170 million, far ahead of the comparable weekend a year ago when they reached $118 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s No. 1 movie, Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson, slipped to second place with about $18.2 million, while the James Brown biopic Get On Up opened in third place with around $14 million, about what had been expected.
