HBO MAY OFFER STREAMING VIDEO — BUT ONLY OVERSEAS

After adding only 400,000 subscribers in the U.S. between 2007 and 2013, HBO is looking overseas for growth opportunities — and specifically at the potential of an online streaming service, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Monday). (In the U.S., consumers who wish to receive HBO Go on their mobile devices must subscribe to a cable or satellite service and also the HBO service.) It continues to maintain that it has no intention of offering a stand-alone HBO streaming service. However, the WSJ observed that launching such a service overseas could give the company more experience in running a broadband service, particularly in areas like customer service and billing, where it has relatively little experience.
