This summer’s record ratings for the World Cup has apparently given the regular season of international soccer a big boost in the U.S. NBC’s coverage of the Arsenal-Crystal Palace match on Saturday morning averaged 885,000 viewers, not huge by most U.S. sports telecasts but the most-watched opening weekend soccer match in U.S. history. On cable TV, Sunday’s Newcastle-Manchester City match on NBCSN averaged 514,000 viewers. That result made it the most-watched opening weekend match on cable in U.S. history. The ratings are especially impressive given the fact that the NBC and NBCSN telecasts began at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time, which is 4:00 a.m. on the West Coast. Meanwhile, Monday night’s ESPN coverage of the "other" football, the Washington Redskins’ preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, garnered 6.90 million viewers, making it the highest-rated and most-viewed NFL preseason game on ESPN in five years.
