TURTLES LIFTS BOX OFFICE ABOVE SAME WEEKEND IN 2013

With Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles leading the way with $65.58 million, followed by Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy with $42.12 million, the overall box office was up 44.25 percent above the comparable weekend a year ago. It was the second consecutive "up" week for the North American box office. Coming so late into the summer season, however, last weekend’s success appeared to have little effect on summer statistics overall. The box office remained down about 15 percent for the season and down about 6 percent for the year. Beyond the top two films, others struggled. New Line’s Into the Storm debuted in third place with $17.35 million while Disney/DreamWorks’ The Hundred-Foot Journey placed fourth with $10.98 million.
