Sales of LCD television sets have plummeted in recent years. (Some analysts have reported that they’re down by more than half since 2011.) But manufacturers are reporting that worldwide they were up about 3 percent for the first six months of this year versus 2013. They were particularly strong in Europe and Latin America, according to research group IHS Technologies. Re/code figures it knows why the sales picture has reversed. IHS listed additional contributors to the rise, including continuing economy recovery in the U.S., a subsidy program by the Mexican government that allows many of citizens to buy new TVs, and the continued junking of obsolete TV sets.
