The No. 1 film in British movie theaters on Sunday was not The Equalizer (although the movie did finish No 1 in the U.K. on Friday and Saturday). It wasn’t even a movie. It was instead Universal’s live telecast from the Victoria Palace Theater in London’s West End of Billy Elliot the Musical – Live, which featured a finale that included 25 former and current Billy Elliots. The Event Cinema presentation, produced by Universal and beamed to 553 theaters, brought in $3.1 million, setting a new record for such live-theater-to-cinema releases in the U.K. The previous record for such presentations was set by NT Live: War Horse, which sold $2.5 million in tickets. The award-winning musical was also shown in theaters in eight other countries, although ticket sales in those countries were not immediately reported.
