COWELL’S X FACTOR RETURN TO UK-TV MARRED BY RIVAL DANCING

In its first head-to-head clash since Simon Cowell returned to the judging panel, the British version of The X Factor, was whipped by the British version of Dancing with the Stars in the ratings Sunday night. Titled Strictly Come Dancing in the U.K. where it originated, the BBC dancing competition attracted an average of 8.4 million viewers, representing 33.7 percent of the British television audience. The X Factor, which is broadcast by the commercial network ITV, was no wallflower as it drew 7.8 million viewers, a 31/3 percent share. It was the first time that the two shows competed for viewers since Cowell, who also produces The X Factor, left four years ago in the hope of reproducing its British success in America. He failed to do so, and the show was canceled by Fox in February after its third season. Last month, Cowell accused the BBC of attempting to sabotage X Factor by scheduling Dancing against it.
