Sony’s early decision back in February to sign Denzel Washington to star in a sequel to The Equalizer appeared farsighted on Monday when final figures indicated that the movie grossed $34.1 million. Washington is one of the few consistent hitmakers who has never previously starred in a sequel. The Equalizer, which drew only so-so reviews from critics, got an A- Cinemascore on Friday and raced far ahead of The Boxtrolls, the only other newcomer to open wide. The animated feature came in third with $17.3 million, edged out by the second week of 20th Century Fox’s The Maze Runner, with $17.4 million. Rounding out the top five were This Is Where I Leave You with $6.9 million and Warner’s Dolphin Tale 2 with $4.8 million. Overall this weekend’s box office was virtually identical with the comparable week’s a year ago. Last year’s drew $95.7 million; this year’s, $98.2 million.
