What was expected to be a close race for first place at this weekend’s box office turned out to be a rout instead. Sony’s No Good Deed, which was not screened for critics and was roasted by them when they got to see it at their local theaters, went unpunished. Indeed, it went well rewarded with an estimated $24.5 million in ticket sales. It blew past Warner Bros.’ Dolphin Tale 2, which brought in about $16.5 million — about the low end of predictions. Nevertheless, the two films succeeded in dislodging Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which fell to third place from first. Guardians, however, collected another $8 million, more than enough to allow it to cross the $300-million mark domestically and lift its international gross to $612. Overall, the box office was down about 13 percent from the comparable weekend a years ago when Insidious Chapter 2 opened at the top.
