A CBS executive appeared to open the door to the possibility that his company’s Showtime pay-TV channel could be offered "à la carte" via the Internet to cord cutters and others who do not subscribe to cable and satellite pay-TV services. As reported by Forbes magazine, CBS COO Joseph Ianniellos told the Nomura Digital Media Conference in New York Thursday that nothing in CBS’s contracts with those services bar it from offering Showtime directly to consumers. Forbes cautioned that "Ianiello didn’t say that anything like this is in the works" and added, "If CBS does offer the network as an online subscription, it will be the first shot fired at the hegemony of cable." Currently, anyone who wishes to receive individual cable networks via the Internet must verify that they already subscribe to a cable or satellite pay-TV service.
