Hopes that the television networks would revive the practice of presenting original series during the summer appeared to have been frustrated following lackluster performances of CBS’s Under the Dome and Extant and ABC’s talent contest Rising Star. Appraising ratings results for the summer; USA Today observed that most of the broadcast networks were flat or down slightly, with CBS still leading the pack — but only because it had added older viewers, not those in the money demographic of 18-49 year-olds. Viewers in that age group were down 14 percent for Fox, 13 percent for ABC, 8 percent for CBS and 7 percent for NBC. Longtime summer hits such as NBC’s America’s Got Talent and CBS’s Big Brother also saw significant audience erosion. But NBC, the newspaper noted, had “modest success” with Night Shift, and Fox with The 24: Live Another Day
