NBC’s Sunday Night Football kicked off the new season in fine form with an average of 21.20 million viewers and an 8.0 rating and a 22 share among the 18-49 age group. Nevertheless the game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos was down from last year’s season opener between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants, which drew a 9.1 rating in the 18-49 demo. Sunday night’s telecast peaked in the first half hour at 8:30 p.m. with 23.98 million viewers but slipped to 18.22 million in the final half hour at 10:30 p.m. Earlier in the evening an overrun of Fox’s NFL Football telecast won the 7:00 p.m. half hour with 19.09 million viewers.
