The nation’s theater owners reacted angrily to the announcement on Tuesday that the upcoming sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will premiere simultaneously on Netflix and IMAX. Good luck finding an IMAX theater at a multiplex willing to screen it! Virtually every major theater chain on Tuesday said that they would refuse to screen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend in any of their theaters if it is also released on Netflix, The online renter is co-financing the movie, which is being released theatrically by the Weinstein Co. IMAX chief Richard Gelfond clearly had no intention of forcing the issue with its exhibitor partners. "We’re not trying to make them do anything they don’t want to do," he told the Los Angeles Times. Still, IMAX decides which films will appear on its screens and for how long. The movie is also scheduled to be released in late August, a time that the New York Times described as "a cinematic black hole," when ticket sales retreat as young moviegoers prepare to return to school and adults return from vacation. A spokesman for AMC suggested that the only IMAX theaters where the movie is likely to be shown are those located in science centers and aquariums.
