FCC MAY GIVE AEREO A NEW LEASE ON LIFE

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler signaled on Thursday that he would be willing to propose new rules that would allow Internet services to offer TV programs online — a move that would revive the recently killed-off Aereo service and pave the way for similar services. Wheeler observed that consumers have "long complained about how their cable service forces them to buy channels they never watch" and that by giving Internet services the status of a multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) — which only cable and satellite services currently enjoy, consumers would be able to "buy the programs they want." Doing so, however, would clearly upend the business models of the broadcast and cable industry, which together reap billions of dollars in profits from the current "bundling" system. It could also be regarded as a death sentence for smaller niche channels that are supported by the current system.
