NETFLIX GETS OFF TO A SOLID START IN FRANCE

October 1, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Netflix has reportedly signed up 100,000 subscribers during the first month of its existence in France, the Paris daily Le Figaro reported on Tuesday. By comparison, CanalPlay, a similar subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service from the French pay-TV giant Canal+, has registered 520,000. However, as the newspaper noted, it took CanalPlay three years to land that number of subscribers. On the other hand, it noted, Netflix has given away a month free to all new users. It is also benefiting from the simple curiosity of some of its subscribers and also by Netflix’s recent "phenomenal hype" campaign. The "magnifying effect" from those factors, Le Figaro commented, "is bound to fade."
