Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper made a killing at the domestic box office over the weekend. With an estimated $90.2 million in ticket sales, it blasted past the opening-weekend record for January, earning nearly twice what most analysts had predicted, and pulled in the biggest haul ever for a non-franchise movie. The figure was all the more impressive given the fact that the movie had already been playing in three major cities, New York, Los Angeles and Dallas, since Christmas and had racked up huge sales in those cities.
