“TAKEN 3” TAKES FIRST AT WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

January 11, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Defying a universally hostile critical reception and predictions of disappointing ticket sales, the Liam Neesen thriller Taken 3 debuted with an estimated weekend gross of $40.4 million. While that number came in below the $49 million for the opening of Taken 2 in 2012, it was well above the $28-32 million that many pundits predicted it would earn. It also came in well ahead of its competitors, including the final installment of The Hobbit, which dropped to fourth place after holding first for the past three weeks. The critically praised civil rights drama Selma took second place with $11.2 million, while the Disney musical Into the Woods placed third with $9.75 million.
