Surpassing even the most optimistic projections, Universal’s Jurassic World opened with $204.6 million, making it the second-best premiere in history, trailing only 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers, which took in $207.4 million over its opening weekend. When final figures are released on Monday, the film could very well wind up with the box-office championship. On Friday, Universal had predicted that the film would earn about $100 million for the weekend. With an overseas take of $307.2 million, the film’s global total of $511.6 million easily topped the opening haul of any film ever produced. “This over-performed in a way that I’ve never seen,” Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak’s veteran box-office analyst, told the Associated Press. “It broke the box office sound barrier.”
