After 27 years, the final episode of M*A*S*H has been deposed as the all-time ratings champion. The honor is now held by last Sunday's Super Bowl game, which saw an average of 106.5 million viewers tune in. The M*A*S*H finale averaged 105.97 million viewers but saw 121.6 million tune in to watch at least six minutes of the 2 1/2-hour comedy/drama. Some 153 million watched at least six minutes of Sunday's game. Several reports pointed out that although the country has grown substantially since 1983, the television audience has been splintered by cable and the Internet over that time; M*A*S*H commanded a far greater share of the television audience (a massive 60.2 rating and a 77 share) than the game did (a 46.4/68 in the nation's largest markets). Of the ten top-rated programs in TV history, M*A*S*H is the only one that is not a Super Bowl game. In an interview with today's (Tuesday) Wall Street Journal, Andy Donchin, director of media investments at ad buyers Carat, commented: "As much as we're pulling away and watching different things, there are some things that we want to watch together."
