“AVATAR” TRIUMPHS IN HOME-VIDEO DEBUT

Like the invaders of Pandora, Avatar crushed all competition at the video stores and video rental outlets last week. Home Media magazine observed that DVD and Blu-ray sales of the movie came to 6.7 million. By contrast, Crazy Heart, featuring Oscar winner Jeff Bridges, debuted in second place with just 5 percent as many sales. DreamWorks/Paramount’s Lovely Bones placed third with 2.9 percent of Avatar‘s sales. Avatar headed the Blu-ray sales chart with 2.7 million units sold, while Crazy Heart placed second with 1.7 percent of that number. On Home Media‘s rental chart, the gulf between first and second place was not quite so wide. Crazy Heart finished in second place with 31 percent as much activity as Avatar, the trade publication observed.
