On the Tonight show Monday, Jay Leno made no mention of the news that Conan O’Brien would be moving to TBS in November. But he did have a less-surprising announcement to present as he brought onto the stage Kevin Eubanks, who, as leader of the Tonight show band, had been a conspicuous offstage presence for 18 years. Appearing uncomfortable seated in the chair next to Leno’s desk, Eubanks confirmed reports that he would be leaving the show in six weeks. “I’m just kind of making it official and all of that,” he said, explaining, “After 18 years of playing America into commercials, I’m gonna go somewhere where I can finish a song.”
