MILEY BEATS THE BLOCKBUSTERS

There may be no songs in Disney’s The Last Song, and Miley Cyrus may have found herself the target of stinging flak from critics for her performance in the movie, but her fans packed theaters on Wednesday nonetheless, as the film opened during spring break in many areas of the country The movie topped the 3D blockbusters Alice in Wonderland and How to Train Your Dragon earning an estimated $5 million in its first day. Beginning today (Friday) it will also clash with another 3D epic, Warner Bros’ Clash of the Titans. “The whole idea of opening on a Wednesday was to try to set ourselves apart from the competition,” Disney distribution chief Chuck Viane told today’s Hollywood Reporter. “There are a lot of big pictures out there, and the only way to get noticed is to get out there and strut your stuff.” The Last Song will also be up against another “little” film, Tyler Perry’s Why Did I get Married Too? from Lionsgate. It’s expected to earn about $25 million over the three days — about what Last Song is expected to gross over five. Box office gurus are predicting titanic things for Titans, which, they say, should earn $60-65 million.
