Director Roman Polanski has charged that the latest efforts by California authorities to extradite him from Switzerland is politically motivated. Writing in an online magazine published by his friend, French philosopher Bernard-Henry Levy, Polanski remarked that the Los Angeles County District Attorney who instigated the extradition proceedings against him, Steve Cooley, is running for state attorney general. His purpose and that of others now demanding that he be extradited, Polanski said, is to serve him “on a platter to the media of the world.” Cooley’s office said that the District Attorney would not comment on Polanski’s remarks.
