MOVIE REVIEWS: “SPLICE”

Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley play the human oddities in Splice, a horror movie about two scientists who create an intelligent part-human, part-animal monster. Rick Groen in the Toronto Globe and Mail credits the actors for making the Frankenstein story believable. “These typically aren’t actors’ movies, yet Polley and Brody both round out their characters nicely, giving them credible weight but not an excess of gravity,” he writes. Adds Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer: “Given the far-fetched and occasionally risible plot, Polley and Brody resourcefully ground their performances in relationship reality, which focuses the viewer on the emotional and ethical stakes rather than on the fantastic scientific breakthroughs.” Lisa Kennedy in the Denver Post also applauds the performance by Delphine Chanéac as the creature. Her “approach to the character elicits tenderness and suspicion. Each is deserved,” she observes. Manohla Dargis in the New York Times says that the film “delivers for the horror movie fan who has grown weary of being suckered by films that promise new frights only to deliver the same old buckets of gore and guts.”
