Paul Hogan, who played Crocodile Dundee in the movies and was the poster boy for Australian tourism for many years, has wound up essentially a prisoner in his own country. Hogan, who now lives in Los Angeles, arrived in Australia last week to attend the funeral of his mother but was prevented from leaving until he settles a $37 million tax bill, The Australian newspaper reported on Wednesday. Tax authorities claim that Hogan used offshore bank accounts to hide earnings from the Dundee movie and other films, although they have not charged him with tax evasion. The French news agency Agence France-Presse asked his lawyer, Andrew Robinson about Hogan’s reaction to the detention. “Stunned is an understatement,” he replied “He’s sitting and twiddling his thumbs hoping that someone will see reason”
