There was no American Idol “results show” at the Television Critics Association summer “tour” on Monday. Critics had expected Fox officials to unveil the new cast of judges and announce other changes for the talent show next season. But Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice would only say that no deals had been signed with anyone “behind or in front of the camera” for next season.. This would appear to include Nigel Lythgoe (behind the camera), who reportedly is about the return as the show’s producer as well as Jennifer Lopez and Steve Tyler (in front of the camera), who are reportedly negotiating deals to sign on as judges. Rice also declined comment on reports that Kara DioGuardi will be leaving. Nevertheless, Joe Earley, president of marketing and communications for Fox, told the TCA that regardless of who will be sitting on the judges panel, the network is planning a major promotional campaign for the fall that will include numerous spots airing during Fox’s coverage of the World Series. After remarking that the spots will feature performances from years past, Early was asked whether departed judges Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul will appear in them. He replied that they will be — if Cowell and Abdul give their permission.
