George Lucas’s Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) special-effects unit has begun work on converting Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace to 3D but does not expect to release it for two more years, the Los Angeles Times reported today (Wednesday). The newspaper said that it had obtained a press release that corporate parent LucasFilm is expected to put out in which ILM visual effects supervisor John Knoll says that it will take that amount of time to perform the conversion. “Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right. … For Star Wars, we will take our time, applying everything we know both esthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience.”
