Avatar director James Cameron’s comments in the current issue of Vanity Fair magazine that movies like Piranha 3D “cheapen” the 3D medium have brought an angry response from the horror film’s producer, Mark Canton. In a statement distributed to reporters on Tuesday, the producer remarked that Cameron’s “comments are ridiculous, self-serving and insulting to those of us who are not caught up in serving his ego and his rhetoric.” Canton goes on to address Cameron directly: “Not everyone has the advantage of having endless amounts of money to play in their sandbox and to take ten years using other people’s money to make and market a film … like you do,” he remarks. And as for Cameron’s own use of 3D technology, Canton says: “To be honest, I found the 3D in Avatar to be inconsistent and while ground breaking in many respects, sometimes I thought it overwhelmed the storytelling.”
