It was the announcer’s voice, oldtimers will remember, that signed off countless hit radio shows: “Art Gilmore speaking. This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.” And it was the voice that ushered in early TV variety shows: “Live, from Television City in Hollywood!” It was a voice heard in movie trailers for such classics as It’s a Wonderful Live, Dumbo, Rear Window, White Christmas, Vertigo and Bye, Bye, Birdie. In person, it was a voice that boomed out of him as if a set of loudspeakers were installed in his diaphragm. Now it is stilled. Reports on Wednesday said that Gilmore died of natural causes on Sept. 25 in Irvine, CA at age 98.
