AFTER GAY PROTEST, UNIVERSAL YANKS THE DILEMMA TRAILER

Universal has quickly yanked the trailer for its comedy The Dilemma after protests by the gay activist group GLAAD over a scene in which star Vince Vaughn says, “Ladies and gentlemen, electric cars… are gay. I mean, not ‘homosexual’ gay, but, you know, ‘my parents are chaperoning the dance’ gay.” The line was also denounced by CNN’s Anderson Cooper, who, in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres last week, remarked: “I was shocked that not only that they put it in the movie, but that they put that in the preview, they thought that it was okay to put that in a preview for the movie to get people to go and see it. I just find those words, those terms, we’ve got to do something to make those words unacceptable cause those words are hurting kids.” Subsequently, the Hollywood Reporter pointed out that similar jokes had appeared in last year’s The Hangover with no response from GLAAD. But Jarrett Tomas Barrios, the new president of GLAAD, responded, “I didn’t start as GLAAD’s president until after that film, but I believe this inconsistency actually points to a new GLAAD that within the limitations of our resources is more active than ever in speaking out against words and images that open the door to anti-gay bullying and violence.” There was no word from Universal about whether the line deleted from the trailer would likewise be deleted from the movie when it opens in January.
