ESPN intends to broadcast eight regular-season NBA games and six playoff games in 3D, tipping off on December 17th with the Miami Heat-New York Knicks game from Madison Square Garden in New York. It will be the first NBA contest ever to be carried on cable TV, although ESPN has carried a handful of soccer, baseball, college football, and golf contests in 3D over the past two years. The NBA games will be distributed via DirecTV, Comcast, and AT&T and will require a special digital 3D television set to be viewed. Since few such sets have yet been sold, ESPN is presumably expecting most viewing to take place outside the home at restaurants and bars.
