BOX OFFICE SLUMPS

Movie attendance on Sunday was significantly lower than most studios had estimated, with virtually all of the top attractions winding up with less than the anticipated results. (Weekend estimates are based on actual ticket sales for Friday and Saturday and an educated guess for sales on Sunday.) Topping the list was Paramount/DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind, which drew $29.1 million, $1 million less than the studio had estimated. Tony Scott’s Unstoppable, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine, opened with $22.7 million. The studio had figured it would earn $23.5 million. The road-trip comedy Due Date dropped a far bigger-than-expected 53 percent in its second weekend to earn $15.4 million and place third. Overall, the top 12 films grossed $111.67 million, compared to last year’s $129,452,765, when 2012 opened with $65.2 million. For the year total box office revenue is up 3.3 percent to $9.14 billion; attendance is down 1.81 percent.
