The British satellite service BSkyB, controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, plans to launch a Middle East Arabic-language news channel that will compete with al-Jazeera. It will operate under the Sky News banner, with headquarters in Abu Dhabi. BSkyB is partnering with Abu DhabiMedia Investment Corp., owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan in the venture, which is due to launch in July. Adrian Wells, who has served as Sky News’s head of international news, will be working with the Abu Dhabi investors to set up the new channel. “The Middle East and North Africa is a highly attractive region for media investment and Abu Dhabi is an excellent location from which to enter this exciting marketplace,” BSkyB Chairman James Murdoch said in a statement.
